VETERAN’S UNITED
REHABILIITATION CENTER AND TRANSITIONAL HOME

FALL 2015, STUDIO II
PROJET DURATION: 6 WEEKS
SCOPE OF WORK: 6,500 SQFT
LOCATION: TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA

The design of this Veteran Rehabilitation Center is inspired and informed by the characteristics of Yin and Yang. The element of Yin and Yang describes how opposite or contrary forces are complementary in the natural world. They give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. Using this philosophy, the creation of this rehabilitation center restores balance in the lives of soldiers and facilitates the growth and recovery as they journey to a healthier life. Creating a sense of community within the space is the primary goal. By doing this, the soldiers will feel empowered and connected to one another. This concept is demonstrated through the balance of various design elements including the balance of forms, colors that coincide with one
another, and the incorporation of dim lighting. This generates a calming mood and provides a sense of harmony and equilibrium. These elements will be exhibited throughout the entirety of the space. The design will simulate a space of refuge and create the feeling of optimism and empowerment as the veterans grow and accomplish their goals on their road to recovery.
